The Letter to the Mayor and Members of the Board of Trustees


Dear Mayor Treuhold and Members of the Board of Trustees,

I write with urgency. 107 Jessup Avenue, indisputably one of Quogue's most significant historic houses, is under contract for sale to a developer -- who plans to demolish it!

Built in 1899, it was home to a Black family (Jessup Manor) before becoming a boarding house (the Shinnecock Arms) in the 1920s to accommodate the domestic workers who served Quogue's summer residents. In 1938, it was listed in The Negro Motorist Green Book—one of only two villages on all Long Island to welcome Black travelers during the Jim Crow era.

Its story is singular—a convergence of Black, Shinnecock, Civil War, Whaling, and regional history in one building. It is one of the last surviving landmarks of Quogue’s historic and vibrant Black community: unique and irreplaceable.

I respectfully urge the Mayor and the Trustees to work with the developer and the owner to halt the demolition and preserve 107 Jessup Avenue. Once demolished, it is lost forever.
